Goldman Sachs
The Merchant Banking Division (MBD) is the investing and lending division of Goldman Sachs, and is one of the largest asset managers in the world. The capital of MBD is a mixture of Goldman's balance sheet plus external capital it has raised through a series of funds. MBD invests globally across almost all asset classes, including senior debt, mezzanine debt, late stage venture capital and growth equity, control private equity, infrastructure and real estate. Note that in certain markets, including in Australia and China, the Merchant Banking Division is known as the Principal Investment Area (PIA). Prior to August 2019, when all of the investing divisions of Goldman Sachs merged, Goldman Sachs had a separate investing and lending division known as the Special Situations Group (SSG). SSG focused on investing the firm's balance sheet in a wide variety of asset classes. It had no external capital. SSG was formed during the Asian Financial Crisis, and originally specialised in distressed lending and acquisition of distressed assets. However, SSG quickly expanded into a broader special situations investor, focusing on areas where other forms of capital were not flowing efficiently, or where returns are out sized versus in-house perceptions of risk.
Archer Capital
Archer Capital specialises in mid-market leveraged buyouts and is currently investing Archer Capital Fund 5. Archer Capital Fund 5 seeks mid-market LBO opportunities in Australia and New Zealand, favouring businesses with the opportunity to invest $75 million of equity or higher. Archer Capital considers an active partnership with management throughout the lifecycle of an investment as an essential foundation for success. We acquire companies in equity partnership with management, either the incumbent management team or a buy-in team. We assist managers to acquire or expand businesses by providing capital and, just as importantly, we actively support those managers to grow the value of their businesses and ultimately to realise that value. We bring operational expertise to our portfolio companies as well as financial and strategic capability. The quality of a business is the key to the success of a transaction. Our expertise lies in identifying potential investment opportunities with businesses in a strong market position and/or with growth potential, with strong cash flows and significant opportunities to improve operational performance. Ultimately, our skill lies in increasing and realising the value of a business. In April 2018, Archer Capital announced it would be winding up its operations.
