DFJ began in 1985 with a focus on early-stage companies. A decade ago, we added our Growth team dedicated to late-stage investing. Today, we have two teams investing two funds. Our Venture team works with founders in the early phases of company building. Our Growth team partners with companies entering hyper-growth mode. DFJ has backed 26 companies that have each achieved more than $1 billion in realized value through an initial public offering or acquisition.
Venrock
Venrock is a venture capital firm headquartered in Palo Alto that focuses on disruptive early-stage technology startups. Venrock partners with entrepreneurs who have grand ambitions and want to tackle big, hard problems that most think impossible. Venrock today consists of two separate programs: a traditional venture capital program, focused on early stage investing in healthcare and technology companies; and a later-stage healthcare program, which implements a venture capital-like long-term approach to investment opportunities in small capitalization public companies and late-stage private healthcare companies.
Venrock was formed in 1969 as a venture arm of the Rockefeller family (the name Venrock being a compound of Venture and Rockefeller), who have a long history of venture-style investing dating back to the early 20th century.
Breakthrough Energy Ventures
Breakthrough Energy Ventures backs new, cutting-edge companies that are developing clean energy innovations. Breakthrough Energy Ventures was created by the Breakthrough Energy Coalition, whose goal is to make sure that everyone on the planet can enjoy a good standard of living, including basic electricity, healthy food, comfortable buildings, and convenient transportation, without contributing to climate change. The Breakthrough Energy Coalition is backed by 28 global high net worth individuals including Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos, Marc Benioff, Richard Branson and Ray Dalio.
We have four criteria. 1) We only invest in technologies with the potential to reduce at least half a gigaton of greenhouse gases every year, about 1 percent of projected 2050 global emissions. 2) We only invest in companies that will ultimately be able to attract additional investment from other investors. 3) We will only invest in projects that our technologists deem scientifically feasible at scale. 4) We target areas in cleantech being neglected currently by other investors.
Our first investing principle is to leverage innovation as broadly as possible. We don't limit ourselves to early- or late-stage companies; to small, medium, or large enterprises; or to particular geographies or technologies. We have very long term investment horizons which allows us to incubate and develop technologies not targeted by traditional investors.
Romulus Capital
Romulus Capital is a Boston-based seed and early stage venture fund that invests in technology startups. Romulus focuses on company-building, rather than betting on companies. Rather than investing in dozens of startups, we go all-in on a few companies a year on capital, team recruitment, customer introductions, and GTM strategy. We frequently invest in first-time entrepreneurs affiliated with top universities and incubators. We bring the same level of grit and hustle as our founders. Romulus Capital was originally founded out of MIT in 2008.
Vertex Holdings
Vertex Holdings is a global network of venture capital funds, comprising Vertex Ventures, Vertex Ventures HC and Vertex Growth. Vertex Holdings is an anchor investor in each of these funds. Vertex Holdings is owned by Temasek, a Singapore sovereign wealth fund.
Vertex Ventures is based in California and invests in early stage technology companies. Vertex Ventures looks for founders tackling fundamental challenges. We look for people who want to make a dent in the wold while growing a multi-billion dollar business.
Vertex HC invests in healthcare opportunities. We invest in and work with high-growth medical device, biotech, and digital health companies, at all stages, worldwide. Our portfolio includes companies at all stages of development, from early-stage companies testing transformative technologies to commercial-stage companies seeking additional growth.
The Vertex Growth Fund provides later stage expansion capital to companies on the cusp of creating a category champion that is enduring and transformational.
Aspect Ventures
Aspect ventures is an early stage venture capital firm based in the United States. We invest primarily at the Series A, and occasionally Seed, stage, and continue to back our entrepreneurs. We have deep investment expertise, having invested and worked alongside entrepreneurs across several market cycles and having backed founders who have created enduring companies and generated billions of dollars of returns. We believe in surrounding an entrepreneurial team with more than one set of insights, experiences, perspectives, and networks to maximize founder success. We are not limited by a particular check size or ownership percentage when we invest in a company. We are focused on getting the right team around the table for our entrepreneurs at every step of their company's growth - from seed to maturity.
